Should I Book Maternity Photos?

Expecting couple sitting on the floor in a cozy, natural light-filled bedroom, lovingly holding the mom’s pregnant belly captured by Jess Palmer Photography, a Rochester, NY maternity photographer specializing in intimate and heartfelt moments.

Pregnancy – a fleeting time that deserves to be celebrated and remembered.

I get it. You may not feel like yourself. You may be sick and tired. Or you may be loving this chapter of your life. Regardless, this is a moment you will want to remember and share with that baby resting in their little cocoon.

I didn’t get maternity photos done for either of my pregnancies, so I understand the hesitation. If I could go back, I would have made the effort. Let’s talk about why you should consider maternity photos and learn from my mistake...

Why Maternity Photos Matter

Your pregnancy is a unique chapter of your story, and in the grand scheme of things, it’s a fleeting moment. Photos allow you to revisit this special time later on. They also give you the chance to share this chapter with the baby who was in your belly in those photos. The one pregnancy photo I asked my husband to take during my first pregnancy now hangs in my daughter’s room, and she loves looking at it, knowing she was the baby in my belly.

Each pregnancy is different and carries its own set of feelings and emotions. Photos let you capture and preserve those beautiful moments forever. During my second pregnancy, I had a specific photo in mind that I wanted to take with my oldest daughter and her little sister in my belly. Unfortunately, I never got around to taking it, and it’s something I really wish I had done.

When is the Best Time for Maternity Photos?

A great time for your maternity photos is between 29 and 36 weeks. This allows the baby some time to grow while giving you a chance to move past the early, often more uncomfortable stages of pregnancy and into a sweet spot!

It’s never too early to reach out to your photographer and schedule the session. Once you've decided you want maternity photos, secure your spot with your photographer as soon as possible!

Finding the Right Fit

Finding the right fit for you and your family is essential. Start by checking out the portfolios of a few photographers in your area to see which style resonates with you and to ensure they specialize in maternity photography.

Once you find a style you love, visit their website and social media to get a feel for who they are and the work they produce. An email or phone call can also help you gauge whether your personalities and expectations align.

Many photographers offer maternity and newborn packages, so it’s a great idea to look at their newborn work as well. At Jess Palmer Photography, I take a baby-centered, lifestyle approach to newborn sessions. This means I focus on capturing the natural essence of your baby and your family without using costumes, props, or unnatural poses. Your baby is perfect just as they are.

What to Expect during Your Session

Once you’ve chosen the right photographer, it’s time to get ready for your session. At Jess Palmer Photography, maternity sessions start with Mom. I’ll guide you through a series of prompts to capture you and your baby, followed by photos with immediate family members.

An outfit change is possible if desired. If you choose to do this, I recommend one formal look and one casual look.

Whether you want to showcase a bare belly or keep it covered is entirely up to you — the goal is to make you feel comfortable and beautiful.

From One Mom to Another

Maternity photos may not feel like a priority right now. Finding the energy for one more thing might feel like the biggest hill to climb—but trust me when I say, you won’t regret having them. I truly wish I had made the effort for a maternity session, especially during my second pregnancy. I don’t want you to look back one day and think, "I wish I had."
