Capturing the First Year: Milestones from Birth - 1 Year Old
The first year of a baby’s life is incredibly special — full of extraordinary growth — yet fleeting. One moment they are a sleepy, tiny human curled into your chest and before you know it, they’re moving around full of personality, curiosity, and spunk.
Let’s walk through that beautiful first year and the milestones your little one is about to experience.
Fresh 48 (24-48 Hours After Birth)
Purpose: To capture baby and their details in their very first hours— to document the raw emotion of baby and family meeting, holding, and becoming.
Style: Documentary. No posing or planned outfits needed. Just baby and your family exactly as you are in those first sacred hours together.
Where & When: In your birth space— hospital, birthing center, or home— 24-48 hours after baby’s delivery.
Additional Info: Commonly purchased as an add-on to a Newborn Session (see below). They also complement the Two or Three Shoot Bundle beautifully:
Fresh 48 & Newborn
Maternity, Fresh 48 & Newborn
Newborn (Birth-1 Month)
Purpose: To capture the new baby, their little details, and the love that they’ve added to your family in a planned session after giving Mom a little head start on her healing.
Style: Baby-led and lifestyle in nature. At Jess Palmer Photography, I believe that babies are perfect just as they are. They are always kept safe, comfortable, and gently guided into natural, supportive positions during their Newborn Shoot. My approach focuses on connection and authenticity rather than heavily stylized and posed newborn imagery.
Where & When: Ideally, within the first 10 days of birth (before baby acne commonly develops around two weeks).
Realistically, whenever you feel ready❤️
Sessions typically take place in-home or in the studio. During summer months, it may be possible to do newborn portraits (or a portion of the shoot) outside if desired.
At this stage: Newborns sleep often and eat every 3-4 hours. Because they spend so much time sleeping, this season is perfect for capturing their button noses, tiny fingers, wrinkled toes, and peaceful expressions that will begin to grow and change soon.
Why Choose Both a Fresh 48 and a Newborn Session?
Although they happen close together in time, these sessions feel very different.
A Fresh 48 captures the real and raw emotion of arrival — the hospital bracelets, the first swaddles, the awe in your eyes.
A Newborn Session allows space for coordination, gentle styling, and flexibility in location. It also gives Mom time to begin healing and offers more options for including siblings and pets.
Together, they tell the full story of your baby’s earliest days. Separately, each provides a meaningful and beautiful glimpse into this fleeting chapter. There’s no wrong choice — only the one that feels right for your family.
Smiles & Emerging Personality (3-4 months)
Purpose: Sometimes the newborn time warp passes in a blur. If you were not able to schedule newborn photos, this stage is a wonderful opportunity to document your baby.
Style: Baby-led, with gentle posing based on your little one’s developmental stage. Comfort and natural expressions remain the priority.
Where & When: In-home or studio works beautifully. Summer sessions may include outdoor portraits. Anytime within the 3–4 month range is ideal.
At this stage: Babies begin to engage with the world through their smiles, coos, and responding to familiar voices. They may be able to lift their head when placed on their tummy and their curiosity can be seen in their wide, bright eyes. They are still small but more expressive than in their Newborn phase.
Sitting (6 -9 months)
Purpose: Your baby is now a social little human and so different from the sleepy newborn you first held. This milestone beautifully showcases growth, personality, and emerging independence.
Style: Gently guided, developmentally appropriate poses that highlight personality and connection.
Where & When: The sweet spot is when baby can sit independently but is not yet crawling. In-home, studio, or outdoor sessions (weather-dependent) all work well for a Sitter Session.
At this stage: Babies sit without assistance, recognizes loved ones, babbles, and squeals to interact with the world around them.
One Year Old! (12 months)
Purpose: To capture the closing of the baby chapter before toddlerhood begins. The growth from birth to one year is astonishing and this milestone is worth celebrating.
It’s also a wonderful time to document your family again — now with an interactive, expressive one-year-old instead of a sleepy newborn.
Style: Baby-led and lifestyle-focused. I follow your child’s lead while gently guiding them into natural, developmentally appropriate moments — both independently and with family.
Where & When: Studio sessions work well, especially if you’d like to incorporate a cake.
If you plan to display images from the shoot at a birthday celebration, schedule your session about three weeks before the party. Otherwise, many families love scheduling close to, or even on, their child’s actual birthday as part of the celebration itself.
At this stage: Babies may be pulling up, cruising along furniture, or taking first steps. First words begin to emerge and everyone is listening closely for that first “Mama” or “Dada.”
All in All…
There are so many opportunities to document your baby’s first year. Whether you choose to document these moments yourself or invite a professional to help tell the story is entirely up to you.
These moments pass quickly, but photographs allow you to hold onto them.
If you’re ready to preserve this season for your family and want some help, I would be honored to walk alongside you and document the moments important to you during your baby’s first year.
